Kenya Airways, Virgin Atlantic sign deal to expand local, global reach

This codeshare agreement means Virgin Atlantic's passengers will have increased access to Nairobi and other East African destinations.

Kenya Airways (KQ) and British carrier Virgin Atlantic have inked a codeshare agreement to expand their reach in the domestic, African, and international markets.

This agreement means Virgin Atlantic's passengers will have increased access to Nairobi and other East African destinations.

Similarly, KQ customers will connect, through London Heathrow, to various Virgin Atlantic destinations, such as Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

A codeshare is a business deal between two or more airlines that allows them to sell seats on each other’s flights and expand their network. Each airline publishes and markets a flight under its designator and number as part of its schedule.

“Through the synergy of our respective strengths and networks, our goal is to enhance the travel experience for our esteemed customers, providing them with expanded choices, enhanced convenience, and seamless connectivity to vital destinations worldwide,” Julius Thairu, KQ’s chief commercial and customer officer, said in a statement on Thursday.

Juha Jarvinen, the chief commercial officer at Virgin Atlantic, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration.

“We’re committed to enhancing connectivity, and as the only UK airline to codeshare on the Heathrow to Nairobi route, we’ll be providing more choice and flexibility for customers booking with Virgin Atlantic.”

Kenya Airways is one of the leading airlines in Africa, boasting membership in the SkyTeam alliance. Recognised as one of the continent's premier carriers, it maintains an expansive network across Africa.

“We are excited to embark on this transformative partnership with Virgin Atlantic. By leveraging our complementary strengths and networks, we aim to enrich the travel experience for our valued customers, offering them greater choice, convenience, and connectivity to key destinations in the world," Thairu added.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, KQ has actively pursued new partnerships and extended its reach across its network.

"We expect this strategic move to bolster its revenue streams, especially as the demand for air travel gradually recovers after a challenging period during the pandemic that resulted in the closure of some airlines," the airline said.
